Assessing the impacts of climate change on community-based sustainable use of forest resources in the Caribbean

CANARI has recently completed a report “Assessing the impacts of climate change on community-based sustainable use of forest resources in the Caribbean” as its first activity in partnership with UNDP Barbados and OECS to provide technical assistance in agriculture and integrated rural development to selected CARICOM/OECS Member States through the Caribbean Regional Unit for Technical Assistance (CARUTA) project.

The report concludes that there have been no specific studies on the effects of climate change on forest-based livelihoods in the ten English-speaking Caribbean countries studied despite the fact that the Caribbean is one of the regions most vulnerable to the effects of climate change and many communities are very dependent on forest resources for subsistence and commercial purposes. The report also provides recommendations for policymakers, donors and others who can support communities to protect their livelihoods from the adverse impacts of climate change.

In keeping with CANARI’s core belief that sustainable natural resource management depends on the effective and equitable engagement of a wide range of stakeholders, its involvement in the CARUTA project will seek to involve resource users; government technical staff working with forests and forest users and/or on climate change issues; and policy makers with responsibilities and interests in rural development, agriculture, natural resource management, community and social development, and climate change.

The case study is available electronically at click here. We would welcome your feedback on the report, which can be sent to kwesi@canari.org.
