HISTORY

CANARI was established under its present name in 1989, it evolved from a 1976 initiative of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund (RBF) and the University of Michigan’s School of Natural Resources (UM-SNR), which by 1978 had come to be known as the Eastern Caribbean Natural Area Management Programme (ECNAMP). The table below highlights the main stages in its development.

Since its inception, CANARI has regularly reviewed the effectiveness of its programmes and reconceptualised its overall strategic direction based on the findings and changes in the regional and global environment. Consequently, there are a number of publications which document aspects of its history and the evolution of its approach to participatory natural resource management:
