Fernandes Rural Livelihoods Project

Background: This pilot project seeks to improve people’s quality of life in six rural communities in Trinidad and Tobago through facilitating and supporting the development of small and micro-enterprises based on the sustainable use of natural resources. The concept note gives further details.

Project goal: The goal of the project is to influence policy and practice to support the development of sustainable rural livelihoods in Trinidad & Tobago.

Project duration: The project is being implemented over a two year period of January 2010 to December 2011.

Funding support: Funding for the first year of the project has been secured from the JB Fernandes Memorial Trust.

Target communities: There are six communities selected for this pilot. Each community was selected using criteria developed on the advice of a stakeholder group comprising CANARI staff, government agencies, donor agencies, and national and regional NGOs working in rural development and natural resource management in Trinidad and Tobago. Communities selected are:

  1. Blanchisseuse, north-east Trinidad
  2. Felicity, west-central Trinidad
  3. Paramin, north-west Trinidad
  4. Plum Mitan, south-east Trinidad
  5. Speyside, north-east Tobago
  6. One other to be confirmed

Project activities in each of the six target communities:

Needs assessment workshop: Stakeholders will identify the needs and opportunities in the community for developing small and micro-enterprises based on the sustainable use of natural resources. The workshop will also prepare community members to fully engage in the project.

Participatory strategic visioning and planning workshops: Stakeholders will collectively develop a vision for sustainable use of natural resources in the community and identify potential small and micro-enterprises based on the sustainable use of these resources.

Selection of priority businesses: Stakeholders will participate in a feasibility assessment to identify small and micro-enterprises based on the sustainable use of natural resources with the greatest potential for success.

Development of six community small and micro-enterprises: CANARI will support each community with developing businesss plans and strengthening their capacity to implement small and micro-enterprises based on the sustainable use of natural resources. [Additional funding to be secured]

Additional project activities:

Facilitating an Action Learning Group: CANARI will facilitate exchanges among community leaders and other key change agents working in rural development in Trinidad and Tobago to analyse learning, share experiences, stimulate collaboration, and network for joint advocacy on how policy and practice can support the development of sustainable rural livelihoods in Trinidad & Tobago.
