CANARI's training workshops are informed by its research and analysis. The Institute offers training workshops on specific subjects aimed at increasing the capabilities and skills of institutions involved in participatory and collaborative natural resource management in the4 insular Caribbean.
In 2002, CANARI conducted a survey with the aim of identifying the training needs of conservation and natural resource management organisations in the insular Caribbean, to inform the development of its Training Agenda for the next few years. This Agenda prioritises the needs based on responses received and will continue to guide the scheduling of courses in the Training Calendar below.
Methodology and Process
CANARI workshops are practical and hands on. They are informed by CANARI's research and past experiences. Designed for maximum learning and participation, each course targets a specific audience and is tailored to meet the needs of professionals in the field. A variety of presentations, case studies, experiential and participatory educational methods is used.
Since exchange of experience and perspectives is an important component of the courses, in selecting participants, CANARI seeks a gender-balanced mix of governmental and non-governmental participants from throughout the region.
Admittance to all workshops is by application only. Application forms for each training workshop are available online. Because space is limited, prospective applicants are urged to submit their forms early.
CANARI may be able to assist applicants in identifying full or partial scholarships to attend its workshops. Scholarships are issued according to various criteria, which may include consideration of:
Persons needing financial assistance are advised to indicate this on their application form and follow-up with CANARI on potential scholarships.
Recipients of scholarships are usually also required to submit a short bio and a report to the funder on completion of the training highlighting key lessons learnt and plans for implementation.
Specialised training
Based on sufficient demand, CANARI can design and facilitate national training courses on request in addition to the workshops and courses offered in its annual training program. CANARI can also organise study tours for groups that emphasise experiential learning and sectoral exchanges. In the past, CANARI has organised study tours on seamoss mariculture and processing, community forestry and natural resource management issues. As with national training courses, study tours are developed on request. Persons interested in requesting specialised training should contact Patricia Franco at CANARI.
